Photographs from a hike to The Narrows along the Pine Creek 08/05/2008
The start of a blind near the meadow.
Here's a view looking down at the meadow. The yellow object to the right is a century cactus bloom.
Here's the view looking to the right of the yellow cactus bloom down at the lower pond.
It was a slow morning nothing but a bee checking out the cactus bloom nectar.
Closer shot of the busy bee.
A few minutes after the bee left a butterfly stopped by.
By now I'm getting bored so I started off on a hike to what is called "The Narrows." Along the way I stopped to get a zoom shot of some nice houses on the side of Strawberry Mountain.
Here's a zoom shot of the Pine Strawberry Fire Department building about 2 miles to the north of the Narrows. There is a cell tower behind the fire station and a ham antenna near the bottom of the picture.
I'm now approaching the northern most part of the Narrows. The Narrows is a steep narrow canyon along the Pine Creek at the edge of town. I'm up on the top looking down as far as I can without getting killed from a fall.
Here's a zoom shot of one of the water holes below.
The view looking south down the canyon.
Further down there is a spot that splits off in two directions. Just as I was getting to this point I spotted a Mt. Lion running away. The cougar was way too fast for me to get a shot with my camera but he/she did send a nice chill up my spine on an otherwise very hot afternoon.
Despite the presences of a cougar in the area, I got down on my stomach with my back exposed and took a shot of the creek below.
Here's a closer view of the Pine Creek below. It's a strait drop down at this vantage point. Getting an over-the-cliff shot was scarier than seeing the Mt' Lion running across the trail in front of me.
Here's a view looking north back towards Pine and Milk Ranch Point. It's time to head back because the clouds are building and it's getting late.
I knew a Mt. Lion was in the area because I saw quite a bit of its scat. Cougars like to mark their territory along trails near shady trees.
Well, these aren't cougars but they do have four legs. Just as I was getting back to the lower pond at the meadow I came across a horse party.
The horse party, on a 6-day trip, was stopping at the pond to let the horses get a drink and some rest. Based on their accents, I'd say over half of them are from somewhere in Europe. The guide is holding the reigns of the horse in braids.
